Summer heat is hard on animals. Animals are much better at keeping warm than they are at cooling off. So how can you ensure that your furry friends stay cool during the hottest times of the year? Advanced Misting Systems created this guide to animal cooling.
As is true at other times of the year, make sure your animals have access to fresh, clean water. During the summer, water may quickly get too hot for animals to drink, so make sure the water is in a shaded area. You can also add ice cubes to their water. Secure the water dish so that it does not get spilled accidentally.
Make sure outdoor animals have access to shade all day. A tarp or a tree is great for shade because it does not restrict airflow. A doghouse or enclosed barn can quickly get too hot without proper air circulation.
Keep the doors and windows of your barn or enclosure open to promote airflow. Add fans to keep air moving. If you are in a dry area, such as the southwest United States, consider adding a misting system to your barn or patio. The misting system not only circulates the air, it cools and conditions it. You can also use a portable misting system if you move your animals to different areas of your property.
When possible, restrict exercise to early mornings or late evenings when the temperatures are not as high. Remember when walking dogs that hot cement or blacktop can burn the pads of their paws, so try to walk them on grass or dirt.
Good grooming is important during the summer months. Matted fur traps heat, so make sure to brush your animals to keep air flow through their fur. If you shave your animals, make sure to leave enough fur to protect their skin from sunburn.
During the hottest time of the day, usually 10 am to 4 pm, consider bringing dogs and cats inside the air conditioned house. Never leave an animal in a parked car, which can get dangerously hot within 10 minutes, even with the windows cracked.
